Advice for Breeding Pug Puppies
Written by Matt Jones on November 27th, 2008Pug puppies or puglets, are extremely intelligent, sociable, have sharp hearing abilities and are very loyal to their owners. The Latin phrase ‘multum in parvo’ translated as ‘much in little’ describes this animal’s huge personality contained in its small body. It is therefore understandable that several people want to breed pug puppies. However, with approximately six million pets killed every year for lack of homes, one should be careful before they make the decision to breed pug puppies.
Breeding should be done very carefully to prevent diseases. Tests should be performed and only healthy pugs referred to as the ‘breed standard’ should be chosen. They should have an excellent pedigree for at least four generations. This is important because a healthy pug will most likely pass on the healthy traits while one with genetic physical defects may pass the defects to their offspring.
Breeders should also remember that breeding a pug could be quite expensive. Breeding pug puppies for sale may not always recover the costs used to raise and train the puppies. There are numerous costs including veterinary bills, food, training costs and the amount of time spent in taking care of the puppies. In addition, female pugs undergo difficult births often dying or requiring caesarian sections. It is also reported that approximately twenty percent of pug puppies die, which can take a huge emotional toll on an individual.
Responsible breeders will make sure that they find homes for pug puppies before they are born as it can be very hard to find homes for puppies If one finds a home, it is also required that they offer a guarantee so that if the pug puppies present medical problems, they can take them back.
However, if after all this considerations one decides to breed pug puppies, they can seek advice from organizations such as the Pug Dog Club of America, which helps individuals to become responsible breeders.
